turn of the century French silver repousse art nouveau mirrored slide locket

This sweet silver turn of the century locket slides open to reveal a surprise: a beveled mirror! These types of lockets began to appear in Europe sometime during the 16th century, and were worn to hide good luck charms, perfume, or tiny love letters. The popularity of the lockets spread, where they were given with other gifts: a painted portrait of a lover’s eye, a small note, or a private token, tucked clandestinely inside.

This pretty locket is covered with repousse art nouveau florals and foliage on one side, and an art nouveau woman’s face on the other, and accented with a brass plated rope frame around the mirror and soft green long pile velvet fabric. It could have been used to hide a love note or two, and also allow for a quick check of the hair before the first dance of the ball.
