rare 19th century French Rouen pottery heraldic tulipiere

Tulipieres first originated in 1600s London during the height of “tulip mania”, and were initially used to grow tulip bulbs—the bulbs were placed so a single bloom would grow from each spout.

Now, they are more commonly used for cut flowers, and the singular, elevating branches make for a unique and visually striking arrangement. 

This stunning, wonderfully hand crafted tulipiere has all the hallmarks of classic hand painted Rouen pottery with floral decorations in the blue, yellow and green colour palette. It also includes a rare image of the heraldic crest of Bretagne (or Brittany).

While remarkably preserved, it does show some signs of age as pictured, though they only add to the rich and storied beauty of this heirloom piece.
