These buffets were staples in the minimal spaces of early  1800s farmhouses, and this piece, from approx. 1810, is an excellent example. They made use of combined storage, where the best dishes and crocks were stored and displayed on the open shelves with storage of other household possessions beneath. The lower  “cage” would have held chickens that would have been brought inside at night, to be kept safe from predators. The cage has a slatted front, the centre slat lifts on a wooden handle to access the interior. The piece ends in protruding “sledge” feet, where the wood grain runs from front to back to resist moisture absorption from a dirt or stone floor. Previously hand waxed to a warm glow, it is in absolutely incredible condition. Truly an heirloom piece.
