This incredible, large scale box, fashioned after an ancient sedan chair, would have once sat atop a dressing table, ready to hang a pocket watch from the interior back hook, and any other jewelry in the interior “seat” section.  

Featuring a velvet covered interior and velvet accents on the exterior, beveled glass on three sides, original ornate hardware, and the most stunning “Vernis Martin” enamel finish with Putti angel images. 

Vernis Martin is a type of japanning or imitation lacquer that has a sheen, polish, and translucence which compel admiration, and named after the 18th century Martin brothers. They ran a leading factory from between about 1730 and 1770, and were vernisseurs du roi ("varnishers to the king"). 

An exquisite heirloom piece, and petite piece of French history. 

While remarkably preserved, it does show signs of age and use, as pictured. 

Sourced from an estate in Arles.
