Simple in design and beautifully crafted, this piece reflects its utilitarian past; refectory benches were used in dining halls of monasteries, convents, boarding schools and colleges, as early as the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. They often feature a plank-style seat and simple, straight legs, sometimes adorned with carved details or decorative elements. These benches were designed to accommodate large groups of people during communal meals or gatherings. Today, refectory benches are sought after for their historical significance and rustic charm.
Sourced from a monastery in the South of France, this handsome bench has been remarkably preserved and is still sturdy and functional, yet still shows wonderful signs of wear to reflect its years of history and use.
