rare 18th century ash cockfighting chair

This three-legged cockfighting chair is a fascinating and rare piece of historical furniture that was popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. These chairs were designed for spectators, typically wealthy gentlemen, to comfortably observe the fights, allowing them to lean forward comfortably and observe the action closely. 

This chair features a tripod base, providing stability on uneven ground, which was common in cockfighting pits. The forward-leaning design includes an armrest thst enabled the user to rest their arms and lean in without straining their back. 

The rope detail wrapped around the base dowels served both a practical and decorative purpose. It added durability and grip, preventing wear to the wooden joints, while also contributing to the rustic charm of the chair. These chairs were often made of hardwoods for strength and longevity, with a design focused on practicality rather than opulence.

As cockfighting declined and the practice became outlawed in many places, these chairs became rare collector's items. Sourced from a family estate.
