pair of 19th century French os de mouton tapestry chairs

There is so much to love about these incredible 19th century French “os de mouton” (or “sheep bone”) chairs: the curving, fluid lines of the oak frame, the fantastic vintage tapestry fabric upholstery with nailhead trim, and classic chapeau de gendarme seat backs. They are subtle yet striking, timeless and yet feel of-the-moment.

Although these are wonderfully preserved, please note one of the chairs has a missing nailhead, and slight wear to the armrest; the other chair has a slight mark on the left side of the seatback. Please refer to the pictures as they also contribute to the description.

The term “os de mouton” (or “sheep-bone” or “mutton bone”) refers to the shape of the arms and lower frame of the armchair. This example reflects the style of the Louis XIII period and the transition to more fluid forms: straight lines gave way to curves.
