A truly incredible piece and work of art, this turn of the century chair features a black lacquer finish, gilt ormolu accents, and that absolutely breathtaking boulle work inlay seat back.

Boulle work is a type of rich marquetry process or inlay perfected by the French cabinetmaker Andre-Charles Boulle. It involves patterned inlays of brass and veneer tortoiseshell, occasionally with other metals such as pewter, much used on French furniture from the 17th century.

This chair retains its original seat construction, and features a red leather upholstery with an embossed gilt trim.

Remarkably preserved and in very good antique condition, with some signs of wear to seatback inlay and frame as pictured.

NOTES:
French lacquer and inlay Chinoiserie chairs date back to the 17th and 18th centuries when there was a fascination with Eastern art and culture in Europe, particularly in France. Chinoiserie, which is the European interpretation of Chinese artistic motifs, became popular in furniture design during this period.

French artisans began incorporating black lacquer, a technique derived from Asian lacquerware traditions, into furniture pieces, particularly chairs. These chairs were often embellished with intricate inlay work depicting scenes inspired by Chinese landscapes, figures, and symbols.

The demand for these Chinoiserie chairs peaked during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, as they were seen as luxurious and fashionable additions to aristocratic interiors. They were often used in salon settings, where they served as both functional seating and decorative elements.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the popularity of Chinoiserie waned and then experienced revivals in various design movements. This heavy and aturdy early 20th century design is vibrant and in excellent vintage condition. Note some signs of age and wear as pictured.
