This 19th-century French green-glazed terracotta water jug, known as a cruche or conscience jug, is a striking example of rustic provincial pottery. Finished in a rich, luminous green glaze, it features multiple small handles and a spout.
Conscience jugs carry a rich history tied to traditions within the French church. They were used by priests to collect post-harvest donations of olive oil, which were then distributed to those in need. More than a simple act of charity, the offering held spiritual significance: in giving, the donor’s conscience was symbolically blessed and purified by the priest, reinforcing the moral and communal value of the gesture.
Heavily utilitarian yet deeply sculptural, the surface bears the beautiful irregularities and wear of age. Today, these rare jugs are highly sought after as decorative statement pieces, bringing texture, history, and soulful character to any interior. Sourced from a brocante in Marseille.
