Bas-relief (from the French bas, meaning "low", and relief) refers to a sculptural technique where figures or designs are slightly raised from a flat background. It creates a subtle, shallow three-dimensional effect, commonly seen in architectural details, coins, and decorative panels. Unlike high relief, where elements project dramatically, bas-relief is more understated—almost like a carving that barely lifts from the surface.

This piece depicts Joséphine Bonaparte, born Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie in Martinique in 1763, was the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress of the French from 1804 to 1810.  Sourced from an estate in Aix-en-Provence.
