We came across these antique tobacco silks at a brocante in Aix-en-Provence. These are small printed pieces of silk or satin that were included as a collectible premium in cigarette or tobacco packaging, mainly during the late 1800s to the early 1900s (especially 1900–1920s).
Also called "cigarette silks," "tobacco silks," or “silkies", they featured a wide range of printed images — national flags, flowers, animals, famous people, university pennants, military insignia, etc.
Many were actually sewn into quilts, pillows, or banners by collectors, making them both advertising ephemera and folk art. We've house these in an original antique frame.
