This antique French gilt brass mascaron is a sought after piece of history. It has the letter "V" etched into the back, likely an artist signature. 

A mascaron is a decorative architectural element typically in the form of a large, sculpted face or mask, found in French and Italian Baroque and Rococo styles. The term "mascaron" is derived from the French word for "mask." These ornamental features were used to adorn facades, doors, and other architectural details.  Mascarons were often used as symbols of protection or to invoke a sense of grandeur.
