In late 19th and 20th century Europe it was common to see a match strike sitting on a bistro table or bar. They served three purposes: the hollowed-out top was used to store matches, the side or base was uses to ignite the match, and the piece often served as an advertising venue. This simple strike was sourced from a brocante in Marseille.
