antique Baxter framed needle box miniature prints

An exquisite pair of antique Baxter framed needle box miniature prints circa 1890s. These prints were often featured on the lids of small decorative boxes used to store sewing needles, hence the name "needle box print." 

George Baxter was a 19th-century English artist and inventor renowned for his innovative printing techniques that revolutionized colour printing.  Baxter's printing method, known as "Baxter printing" or "oil color printing," involved the use of multiple woodblocks or metal plates, each inked with a specific color, to recreate vibrant and lifelike images. This technique allowed for a remarkable level of colour depth and realism, setting a new standard for printed illustrations and contributing to the widespread popularity of illustrated books, religious prints, and collectible cards during his time.

They became highly collectible and sought after during the 19th century for their intricate beauty and lifelike appearance.
