Hugo Berger, also known by the pseudonym "Goberg," was a German metalworker and designer active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for his work in the Arts and Crafts and Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) movements, creating decorative metal objects such as candlesticks, candelabras, and bookends. His designs were characterized by a rustic, hand-crafted appearance, often featuring hammered metal surfaces and simple, functional forms.
These unusual wrought iron candlesticks once hung on the walls of a ship. The base that holds the candle can swing allowing for the candles to stay upright and lit over open waters. They can also be used on a flat surface.
Sold as a pair. Sourced from an estate in Aix-en-Provence.
